Overview: A Life-Saving Mission Powered by Mapsly

In dental emergencies, every second counts. When a tooth is knocked out, immediate care can mean the difference between saving or losing it. That’s the mission behind the company  Dental Traumatology Projects (DTP) with their Tooth Rescue Box initiative led by Jörg Erich Knieper — an ambitious, humanitarian project aiming to provide rapid access to vital dental preservation tools and nearby dental care facilities.

With a network of over 600 partners, including dental associations, ministries, and first-aid organizations like the Red Cross, the Tooth Rescue Box is available in schools, kindergartens, swimming pools, sport locations, pharmacies  and many other places throughout Germany and some other countries. But managing a nationwide logistics and awareness campaign for over 113,000 addresses across 50,000 institutions requires more than just goodwill — it demands intelligent data organization, precise geolocation, and user-friendly mapping. That’s where Mapsly comes in.

The Challenge: Visibility and Access in Critical Moments

The Tooth Rescue Box is a simple yet powerful tool: a small bottle filled with a cell-preserving solution. When a tooth is knocked out, it is placed in the liquid, which keeps cells vital for up to 48 hours — buying time until the patient can see a dentist.

The box has existed since 1994, but few people are aware of it. To change this, the Dental Traumatology Projects decided to send Tooth Rescue Boxes to locations with a high risk of dental trauma.

However, for this to work:

  • The Tooth Rescue Box must be readily available at the scene.
  • The patient or guardian must quickly find the nearest participating dentist.
  • Institutions that used the box need a simple way to request a replacement.
  • Town governments need region-specific visibility on box deployment.

Dental Traumatology Projects originally used a combination of Excel files, CRMs, and a basic OpenStreetMap-based interface. While functional, these tools lacked real-time location intelligence, filtering, and customizable territory visualization. Most importantly, the dentist locator required scrolling through long tables with 40,000+ entries — impractical during an emergency.

The Solution: Mapsly Brings the Tooth Rescue Network to Life

With Mapsly, the Tooth Rescue team built a sophisticated, real-time map interface that solves multiple operational challenges at once:

✅ Shared Maps for Every Town

Using Mapsly’s shared map functionality, Dental Traumatology Projects can instantly generate public-facing maps filtered by region — for example, a view of all Tooth Rescue Box locations in Kiel — and share them with local governments, school administrators, or public websites. Instead of manually updating Excel files or building custom maps for each region, he now says:

“Tell me only the area, and it’s online.”

These shared maps empower mayors, administrators, and educators to understand the preparedness level in their area and take ownership of filling the gaps. Jörg explains:

“When a mayor sees a dental accident can happen in their town, they want to say: ‘We are prepared.’ Mapsly helps make that visible.”

✅ Dentist Finder in a Click

The new map includes both Tooth Rescue Box locations and nearby dentists. By clicking on a pin, users can instantly open Google Maps directions — no more hunting through tables or manually comparing addresses. This not only speeds up emergency response, but also simplifies operations for pharmacies and dental dealers, who can use Mapsly’s route planning and territory tools.

“Mapsly helps people find the dentist very fast — and in cases of dental trauma, that’s a service that saves smiles.”

✅ Territory Management at Scale

Dental Traumatology Projects created 100+ territories across Germany in Mapsly — visualizing where the initiative is already active (blue), where it’s in progress (orange), and where action is still needed. These regions are matched to CRM data, allowing his team to segment communications and plan rollouts with surgical precision.

“It’s about showing how Mapsly helps people. When someone gets their tooth saved because of this map, that’s a real impact.”

A Platform for Global Growth

While Germany is the current focus, the Tooth Rescue Box is already expanding to Europe. Mapsly’s flexible infrastructure makes international replication seamless. Jörg notes:

“We can start in 10 countries within a few weeks — I already have the addresses. I just need the pins.”

Conclusion: Technology with a Purpose

By partnering with Mapsly, the Tooth Rescue Project has transformed from a brilliant idea into a nationwide service infrastructure. It bridges the gap between emergency readiness, public health, and modern technology.

“It’s about showing how Mapsly helps people. When someone gets their tooth saved because of this map, that’s a real impact.”

More than a map, Mapsly became a mission-critical tool that helps thousands of children and adults across Germany get the care they need when it matters most.
